Scholarships for excellent students

The University of Amsterdam aims to attract the world’s brightest students to its international classrooms. Outstanding students from outside the European Economic Area can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.

Requirements for eligibility

Candidates wishing to take part in the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship programme must meet the following requirements:

• Hold a non-EU/EEA passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (“Studiefinanciering”; for more information please refer to: www.ib-groep.nl). The scholarship office should be notified as soon as possible of any change in nationality, type of residence permit, and/or possible “Studiefinanciering” support, throughout the academic year.
• Be fully admitted to a degree programme at the Universiteit van Amsterdam which is registered at the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes (CROHO; for more information refer to: www.ib-groep.nl).

  Scholarship continuation is not guaranteed when a candidate changes his or her degree programme.
• Be admitted to a bachelor’s or master’s programme at the Universiteit van Amsterdam for the first time. AMS will not be awarded to candidates who are admitted for a second bachelor’s or master’s programme at the Universiteit van Amsterdam.
• Be able to comply with Dutch visa regulations.
• Be enrolled at the UvA as full-time student for the academic year and the programme for which the scholarship is awarded.
• The candidate should not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship. Notify the scholarships office when another full scholarship such as HSP, Alban, NFP, etc. has been awarded and which scholarship has been chosen to accept.
• Scholarship continuation for subsequent year(s) of study depends upon satisfactory study progress. The programme you will be enrolled in, as it depends on the curriculum and rules and regulations of the department, sets the standard for satisfactory progress, the time and manner in which progress will be measured. Please be advised that you are expected to gain approximately 80% of credits in any one year.

The programme you wish to apply for might set extra requirements such as academic and language requirements.

Lund University Global Scholarships, Sweden

A selective, merit based scholarship for top academic students
The Lund University Global Scholarship programme is targeted at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the European Union/European Economic Area (and Switzerland). Top academic students have a proven record of achievingconsistently high grades in previous studies. The scholarship is selective and completely merit based. No consideration is taken of the students’ financial needs in the selection process.
Scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the tuition fee. The scholarship value is deducted from the tuition fee of the programme or free-standing course for which you are awarded a scholarship. Please note that the Lund University Global Scholarship does not cover living costs.
Who is eligible?
Citizens of countries outside the European Union/European Economic Area (and Switzerland) who have applied for Bachelor’s or Master’s level studies at Lund University for a minimum of one semester of study (the equivalent of 30 ECTS full-time study) and who are required to pay tuition fees.

• Please note that students who are eligible to apply for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarship for category 2 countries can also apply for the Lund University Global Scholarship.
• Students who are eligible to apply for the other Swedish Institute scholarships for Eastern Europe, the Baltic Sea region and Turkey can also apply for the Lund University Global Scholarship.

The Lund University Global Scholarship programme is not open for students from the following 12 countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Students from these countries should apply for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarship (category 1 countries).
When and how to apply
The next round of applications is due to open on 9 November 2012 and will close mid-January 2013, for students applying for studies starting autumn 2013. 
To apply for a Lund University Global Scholarship, you must first apply for the programme(s) or free-standing course(s) you wish to study at Lund University using the online, national application website, official website, during the application time for autumn semester studies. You then apply for a Lund University Global Scholarship using our online application form (the online form is published when the application period is open).
Once you have completed the online scholarship application, you post a printed and signed copy of the completed application form, your CV and scholarship “motivation letter” together with your programme/course application supporting documents. These are all posted together to University Admissions in Sweden, FE 1, SE–833 83 Stroemsund, Sweden.
Please do not send your scholarship application documents directly to Lund University.
Please note that the scholarship personal “motivation letter” (maximum 500 words) isdifferent from any statement of purpose you may be required to submit as part of your programme application documents. Your scholarship personal “motivation letter” should explain why your academic performance and reasons for applying to Lund University make you an appropriate recipient for a Lund University Global Scholarship.
You can only apply for one scholarship per programme or free-standing course. If you are applying for more than one programme or free-standing course at Lund University, you must make a separate scholarship application for each programme/course to which you have applied.
Selection process
The selection process for scholarships is undertaken in parallel with the programme/course selection process. Priority will be given to students with high academic performance and who demonstrate a strong commitment and desire to study at Lund University. As the scholarship is merit based only, no consideration is taken of the students’ financial needs in the selection process.

Reasons to Migrate from Microsoft Access to MySQL

The use of MySQL as a storage manager for Access offers several benefits. One is that you can use your information in additional ways when it's not locked into Access. Other differences pertain more specifically to the case where you intend to continue using Access as the user interface to your information.

Deployment of information. When your information resides in MySQL, you're free to continue using it from Access if you wish, but a number of other possibilities open up as well. Any kind of MySQL client can use the information, not just Access. This allows your data to be exploited more fully in more contexts, and by more people.For example, other people can use the data through the standard MySQL client programs or from GUI-based applications. Your database also becomes more accessible over the Web. Access now provides some capabilities for making a database available on the Web, but if MySQL manages the database, you have a wider range of options. MySQL integrates easily with Web servers like Apache through any of a number of languages, such as Perl, PHP, Python, Java, and Ruby. This allows you to provide a Web interface to your database with the language of your choice. In addition, the interface can be accessed by browsers on many types of machines, providing a platform independent entryway to your information. All of these components can be obtained for free—MySQL, Apache, and the languages just mentioned have been released as Open Source. You can also obtain them in packages that include support.

Multiple-user access. Although Access provides some data sharing capabilities,that's not really its strength. It has the feel of a single-user data manager designed for local use. MySQL, on the other hand, easily handles many simultaneous users. It was designed from the ground up to run in a networked environment and to be a multiple-user system that is capable of servicing large numbers of clients.

Management of large databases. MySQL can manage hundreds of megabytes of data, and
more. Care to try that with Access?

Security. When Access tables are stored locally, anyone can walk up to your Windows machine, launch Access, and gain access to your tables. It's possible to assign a database a password, but many people routinely neglect to do so. When your tables are stored in MySQL, the MySQL server manages security. Anyone attempting to access your data must know the proper user name and password for connecting to MySQL.

Backup management. If you work in an organization that supports many Access users, migrating data to MySQL provides a benefit for backups and data integrity. With Access databases centralized in MySQL, they're all backed up using the regular MySQL backup procedures that already exist at your site. If individual Access users each store their data locally, backup can be more complicated: 50 users means 50 database backups. While some sites address this problem through the use of network backups, others deal with it by making backups the responsibility of individual machine owners which unfortunately sometimes means no backups at all.

Local disk storage requirements. Local Access database files become smaller, because the contents of tables are not stored internally, they're stored as links to the MySQL server where the tables reside. This results in reduced local disk usage. And, should you wish to distribute a database, less information need be copied. (Of course, anyone you distribute the database to also must have access to the MySQL server.)

Cost. MySQL can be obtained for free. Access cannot. Providing other means of using your database (such as through a Web interface) can reduce your dependence on proprietary software and lower your software acquisition and licensing costs.

Hardware choices. MySQL runs on several platforms; Access is a single-platform application. If you want to use Access, your choice of hardware is determined for you.

Microsoft Access or MySQL?

Microsoft Access is a popular data management application that allows you to store information in tables that it manages directly from the local disk. You can also use Access as a front end, that is, as an interface to information that is located else where and handled by another storage management system. In this case, Access acts as a client that connects to a server that provides the data. The MySQL database system is one such storage manager; if you install the MyODBC driver, Access can make ODBC connections to MySQL servers over the network. You can still use the contents of your tables through Access, but the tables themselves are hosted by the MySQL server.

Access has its strengths, such as an easy to use interface. Access also has its limitations—it's generally used as a personal or single-user application, typically for managing limited amounts of data. (Access is not commonly used for databases hundreds of megabytes in size, for example.) Because of its storage management limitations, you may be considering how to retain the Access interface but migrate your information to a storage manager with greater capabilities. Or you may even be considering a move away from Access entirely. This article outlines some benefits that you stand to gain by using MySQL to manage your data, and provides some guidelines to help you migrate locally stored Access tables to MySQL. How to create tables in FoxPro

1. Make sure your computer has installed FoxPro for Windows.
2. Click Start then All Programs then FoxPro for Windows then FoxPro for Windows.
3. Then will appear.
4. Click File then New.
5. In the File Type option, select Table / DBF and click New.
6. Then fill the table structure that dibutuhkan.lalu click OK.
7. Before storing the table structure that has been created. Note the location of the directory as a place to store the table structure.
8. After the selected directory. Save with the DBF extension. Then click Save.
